Pinewood Derby

Even though Randy was dreading the whole Pinewood Derby thing, Halen was way excited.  He didn't really know what to expect so maybe it was more curiosity than excitement but he was still looking forward to it.  We learned a lot of things in our first time around.  Like what kind of saws to use to cut it out and what kind of paint not to use.  We were one of the last wards in the area to do our derby so by the time it came to adding the weight, we had a hard time finding any left at any of the stores in town except the scout store which charges way too much.  We'll be more prepared next year.

We had a dinner of hot dogs and chips before starting the racing.  Not exactly a Friday night dinner date that I prefer but oh well.  The kids liked it so I guess that's all that mattered.
Alex & his friend BreeAnna love hanging out together
Finally the race began.  We weren't sure how it would all work but it all was put together pretty well and went smooth.  Everything was done electronically and the computer said who was going to be racing when.  Halen was one of the first 3 and it went pretty quick from there.  Halen's car did fairly well.  He won a couple heats and he was so excited to be able to push the button to start the cars.
Halen was jumping up and down he was so excited :)
Halen ended up taking 11th overall but if you look at the scores behind him in the pic below, he only missed 10th place by .003 so he felt pretty happy about that for his first time.  I was kind of surprised that they didn't do any awards of any kind but our scout master is kind of new so maybe next year.  Halen didn't know any different so I guess it's ok.
So proud of my little scout.  I love that he's still excited about scouts and that he's learning some good life lessons.
