During the school year, each student can read so many minutes to earn a kite at the kite festival at the end of the year. Halen was so excited to be able to participate and made sure he got all of his minutes in each day. On April 20, we took the family and met grandma & grandpa Simkins out at Sun River golf course to go play. This was our first kite festival so we didn't know what to expect but it was a mini carnival. They had train rides (which the boys couldn't even be bribed to ride Ü), bounce houses, vendor booths, live entertainment and of course kite flying (when the wind cooperated).
We first stopped at the kite tent to redeem Halen's reading chart for a kite. He chose a black Angry Bird one and we found out later that it was a little too skinny to get much air to fly well but he didn't care, he liked how it looked.
Then we headed over the bounce houses where they got to choose one "activity" to do. They chose to do the Ninja fighting contraption (I don't know what it's really called). We tried to talk them into doing something else but Halen was VERY insistent on trying it out. The bars weighed about half as much as Alex does so he had a hard time holding it and standing up but once he figured it out he did OK. The only problem was once he got up, he couldn't swing it around and still keep his balance. It was quite funny to watch them. The first one to get knocked off 3 times lost and of course Alex got knocked off and felt pretty sad but after they finished and Halen was about to get off his platform, Randy picked up the bar and pushed Halen off so Alex felt a little better. Halen just laughed.
