We had planned to go to Disneyland for Spring Break again this year and had even bought tickets in February before the prices went up again but as Spring Break got closer we realized that a lot of our favorite rides were closed for renovations and we didn't want to go if we couldn't ride those so we scrambled to come up with a different location. Randy & I had always wanted to go to San Antonio on a temple trip but thought the whole family might like to go see the Alamo and go to Sea World so we got looking and flights were open getting there so we decided to try it.
We left on Saturday afternoon and flew to Salt Lake where we got on another flight from there to San Antonio. Our kids love to fly and have gotten pretty good about sweet-talking the flight attendant into an extra cookie or something. :)

By the time we rented our car, grabbed something for dinner and checked into the hotel, it was pretty late. We had to do some room shuffling because the room they gave us had been smoked in even though it was a no smoking hotel and the only room left only had a king bed so that made for a fun night with 5 of us. Luckily we were only staying one night and moved to another hotel the next night. But breakfast was good the next morning and the kids thought the Texas-shaped waffles were fun.
The next morning, we checked out of the hotel and headed over to the Alamo. I had remembered to have the kids bring their jackets but I didn't since it was already warming up back home and I thought "oh we're going to Texas, I won't need a jacket". Well, it was overcast and a little chilly that morning and I was wishing I had my jacket. Oh well, I survived. :)
The Alamo was quite a bit smaller than I thought it would be but maybe that's because it's surrounded by huge buildings so it just seemed small. We bought a couple headsets to listen to the audio tour and we all had fun taking turns learning about the history and tragedy that happened here.

They had people dressed up in period clothing and had a couple tents set up to show a little of what it was like to live there in the early 1800's. They did a demonstration on how to load and shoot a shot gun which we all thought was fascinating but Mia cried pretty hard because of the noise...she was louder than the guns. :'(
After spending a couple hours at the Alamo, we walked across the street to the shopping district and got some lunch before taking a walk down the River Walk. The River Tour boats were on the opposite end from where we started so we basically walked the entire River Walk District before we got to the boats but that was still fun. The walkway was extremely narrow in places and the restaurants had seating right up to the walkway so it was difficult to maneuver at times but it was an interesting place. It was probably beautiful at night all lit up but we left before it got too dark.

We finally made it to the tour boats and had fun taking a ride down a portion of the San Antonio river that takes you by restaurants and shops and hotels.

After the boat tour, we walked back on the opposite side of the river that we came in on did a little shopping for souvenirs along the way. We made our way back to the car and drove around the downtown area for a little bit before getting dinner and checking into our new hotel. We had been on our feet all day and we were ready to relax a little bit. It was a good day and I loved how much my kids were intrigued by all the history they got to learn about.
